Coaching Overview

This document is designed to help you understand the nature of coaching and how to get the most from a coaching partnership.

What Is Coaching?

Coaching is a solution-focused, results-oriented process in which your coach facilitates the enhancement of your performance, self-directed learning and personal growth based on trust and mutual respect.

Why Coaching? Why Now?

Coaching helps to build a new foundation with your employees – one that is based on self-responsibility and self-accountability.

Why do Organizations hire Coaches?

Organizations hire coaches for Results - to improve performance, alignment, mission integration, as a catalyst for change and for leadership development. Coaches help organizational leaders to maintain focus on what will make them most successful.

Why does Coaching work?

Coaching works for several reasons:  Synergy between the coach and organizational leaders creates momentum.  Better-defined goals support leaders to move toward those goals faster and effortlessly. Leaders develop new skills, and these skills translate into more successes.

The Coach Will:

  • Encourage you to set goals that you truly want.
  • Ask you to do more than you may have done on your own.
  • Help you focus better in order to produce results more quickly.
  • Provide you with the tools, support and structure to accomplish more.

How Is Coaching Different from Counseling or Consulting?

Coaching is not counseling, which goes into depth about various issues, usually dealing with the past, nor is it consulting which generally results in giving you answers.  Coaching is more action-oriented and focuses primarily on the present and future. Your coach enables you to determine your own “answers” through the work done in a coaching partnership.
